New Delhi. Incidents of Child Marriages are seen more in Bihar, West Bengal and Tripura. In these places, more than 40 percent of the women got married at the age of 18. This has been revealed in a recent survey by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS). The survey was conducted in 22 states and union territories of the country.
Survey conducted in 6.1 lakh households under NFHS-V
National Family Health Survey – Andhra Pradesh (12.6 per cent), Assam (11.7 per cent), Bihar (11 per cent), Tripura (21.9 per cent), West Bengal (16.4 per cent) in the age group of 15 to 19 years at the time of five. A number of women had either become mothers or were pregnant. The survey is being conducted in 6.1 lakh households under NFHS-5 wherein information on factors related to population, health, family planning and nutrition is being collected through interviews.
Bihar (40.8 per cent), Tripura (40.1 per cent) and West Bengal (41.6 per cent) are among the states where most of the women in the 20 to 24 years surveyed were married before the age of 18. The legal age limit for marriage is 18 years. The survey said that 31.8 percent of the women in the age group of 20 to 24 years of age in Assam got married at the age of 18 years. In Andhra Pradesh, the number of such women was found to be 29.3 percent, 21.8 percent in Gujarat, 21.3 percent in Karnataka, 21.9 percent in Maharashtra, 23.5 percent in Telangana and 26.4 percent in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Results released under the first phase of 17 states and five union territories
In the states and union territories surveyed, the number of men married before the legal age of marriage is 21, much less than women. The Ministry of Health had said that in 17 states and five union territories, the results of NFHS have been released under the first phase and the results of the states in which the survey is being conducted in the second phase will be released next year.
