At least 62 individuals have died in simultaneous violent riots in three Ecuadorean prisons on Tuesday that the federal government described as a concerted motion by prison organizations.

President Lenin Moreno has sought to manage prison violence in the Andean nation, declaring the prison system in a short lived state of emergency, due to the frequent confrontations between prison gangs.

“These were two groups vying for criminal leadership within the detention centers,” mentioned Edmundo Moncayo, director of Ecuador’s prison company.
