- Jamil Chowdhury, 22, has been charged with having sex with a teenage girl, 14
- He was detained at a home in Villawood, Sydney, by the girl’s family on Monday
- Police alleged in court he had gone there to have sex with the 14-year-old girl
- He is alleged to have also had sex with the same young girl earlier in January
A man has been refused bail after allegedly being caught sexually assaulting a young girl he met and groomed over social media.
Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury, 22, was detained by the family of a 14-year-old girl who he allegedly kissed and sexually assaulted during an encounter on January 2 this year.
After that alleged meeting the Bangladeshi national had kept in contact with the girl, sending a ‘high’ number of messages to each other over Instagram.
Following the first alleged meeting the girl’s mother became aware of the messages between the pair, and police said she told Chowdhury her daughter was underage.
Jamil Ahmed Chowdhury, 22, faced Fairfield Local Court on Tuesday afternoon where he was refused bail over the alleged sexual assault and grooming of a 14-year-old girl in Sydney’s west
But they allegedly continued to message and Fairfield Local Court heard on Tuesday that at one point they ‘professed their love for each other’.
When Chowdhury allegedly returned to the girl’s home on Monday night her family were home and restrained him until NSW Police arrived.
He was arrested and taken back to Fairfield Police Station for questioning, where the court heard he denied the allegations.
Court documents alleged Chowdhury met the teenage girl on December 1 last year and had continued ‘indecent’ their chats on Instagram until Monday night.
Police allege Chowdhury hoped this would make it easier to procure the girl for sex.
The alleged sexual assault occurred on January 2, 2021, after which Chowdhury allegedly kept in contact with the teenager over Instagram
The girl’s family detained Chowdhury after he allegedly returned to her home on Monday night until police arrived. He was taken to Fairfield Police Station and charged with two offences
He was charged with one count of having sexual intercourse with a child and one count of grooming a child over the age of 14 and under 16.
Chowdhury applied for bail on Tuesday afternoon but that application was refused by Magistrate Theo Tsavdaridis.
Chowdhury was ordered to reappear in court on February 9, 2021.
