Former President Pranab Mukherjee dies at age 84,
Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee passed away at the age of 84 in Delhi. His son confirmed the news on twitter.
Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee passed away at the age of 84 in Delhi. Earlier today, the hospital issued a statement saying that the former President’s health had worsened and he was in septic shock due to lung infection.
Mukherjee reportedly suffered injury to the forehead and temple after a slip in the bathroom on 9 August. The next morning, he was admitted to the Army R&R Hospital, where a CT scan revealed a clot in his head. According to the hospital, he underwent a “life-saving emergency surgery” to remove it.
While the surgery was claimed to have been successful, it has remained in a “serious” condition and has since been assisted by the ventilator. His health worsened on Monday, and the hospital said he had a “septic shock” due to his lung infection.
Mukherjee, 84, was put on ventilator and being treated for a lung infection. Information about Mukherjee’s death has been tweeted by his son Abhijeet Mukherjee.
The former President is survived by two sons and a daughter.
Abhijit took to Twitter and made the announcement.

A seven-day national mourning has been declared by the government on the death of the former president. This mourning will be held across India from 31 August to 6 September.
President Ramnath Kovind and PM Modi have expressed grief over the demise of Pranab Mukherjee. President Ramnath Kovind tweeted that the heart was shocked to hear about Pranab Mukherjee’s death.
“Sad to hear that former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee is no more. His demise is passing of an era. A colossus in public life, he served Mother India with the spirit of a sage. The nation mourns losing one of its worthiest sons. Condolences to his family, friends & all citizens.”
On the demise of the former President, PM Modi tweeted that he was an excellent scholar, everyone in the political community respected him.
PM Modi wrote,
“India grieves the passing away of Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee. He has left an indelible mark on the development trajectory of our nation. A scholar par excellence, a towering statesman, he was admired across the political spectrum and by all sections of society.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted,
“Deeply anguished on the passing away of former President of India, Bharat Ratna Shri Pranab Mukherjee ji. He was a vastly experienced leader who served the nation with utmost devotion. Pranab da’s distinguished career is a matter of great pride for the entire country.”
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted,
“Deeply anguished by the demise of former president of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee ji. He was widely respected by the people across all sections of society. His demise is a personal loss. He had tremendous knowledge of India’s history, diplomacy, public policy and also defence.”
