James Redford, son of actor Robert Redford, died at his home in Marin County , California, at the age of 58 on Friday after a fight against liver cancer.
James Redford is survived by his wife and their two children, his two sisters, and his parents, Robert Redford and the historian Lola Van Wagenen.
Kyle confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune newspaper that her husband, James, had died of bile duct cancer found in the liver while waiting for a transplant last November.
In a tweet James’ wife Kyle posted to his account, she wrote their family is “heartbroken.”
“Jamie died today. We’re heartbroken,” she wrote. “He lived a beautiful, impactful life & was loved by many. He will be deeply missed. As his wife of 32 yrs, I’m most grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together. I don’t know what we would’ve done w/o them over the past 2yrs.”
Since childhood, he began his battle for wellness, having undergone two liver transplants in 1993. The philanthropist founded the James Redford Institute for Transplant Understanding, a non-profit group to teach people about organ and tissue donation.
Later, he founded The Redford Center with his father Robert, now 84, a non-profit organization that aims to produce films and even grant grants to filmmakers focusing on the environment and climate in the hope of finding a solution to climate change.
“With Jamie came love and contagious joy,” said Redford Center executive director Jill Tidman in an Instagram post. “He approached everything he did with kindness and warmth, and an openness that spread itself easily among others.”
Robert Redford released a statement about his son’s passing.
“The grief is immeasurable with the loss of a child. Jamie was a loving son, husband and father,” the statement read. “His legacy lives on through his children, art, filmmaking and devoted passion to conservation and the environment. Robert Redford is mourning with his family during this difficult time and asks for privacy.”
