He said, ‘Congress party is committed to the welfare of Dalit, deprived and backward classes. By joining the coalition government in Maharashtra, we are more conscious of our responsibility towards these classes. Recently a conference of enlightened people of these communities was also organized.
According to Patil, the four-point initiative that Sonia has asked Thackeray to take is the suggestion to allocate budget in proportion to her population for the development of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The Congress President also asked Thackeray to introduce reservation in government contracts and projects for undertakings owned by people belonging to SC-ST communities, to fill the vacancies of posts reserved for these communities in various departments.
He said that scholarship schemes and hostel facilities should be expanded for the youth of SC-ST classes with the highest priority being education, technical training and skill development. Patil also informed that the process for the selection of the new chairman of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee is underway and a decision will be taken on it in the next few days.
